Brad parked their rental on S. 1st Street West in front of Ireland Bank’s small blue and white building. They split up, each working on opposite sides of the main road. Brad started with the bank, then questioned residents living in a few modest-sized homes facing 1st Street. Sadie crossed the street and visited Broulim’s Fresh Market, an ACE hardware store, a Lallatin Food Town grocery store, and a squat-looking brick building with an American flag flying atop the flagpole. No one claimed to have seen anyone matching Leona’s description, and they didn’t seem to recall a black Cadillac Escalade SUV.

She called Brad, but the call went to voicemail; he was across the street in a cute bed and breakfast nestled beneath a beautiful grove of mature shade trees. Sadie knew he would return her call when he was finished. She crossed a small side street and spoke with the cashier in the Maverick Gas Station, a by-the-hour employee who said he would need to get his manager’s permission to let her view their surveillance footage.

“I’m not sure that’s necessary at this point, but if we need to, you can call her?” Sadie asked.

“I can call him if you need me to, yes,” he said. He didn’t seem too impressed with Sadie’s credentials.

Brad texted her: What’s up?

She texted back: You get anything?

No.

She slid her phone back into her pocket, thanked the cashier, and went next door. There, she spoke with several people at a small building belonging to Mountain States Insurance Group and another business set back farther off the road called Caribou Jack’s Trading Company. The sign advertised lumber and building materials. That was where she hit pay dirt.

The man she spoke with nodded and said, “There was a commotion out here yesterday or the day before. I can’t remember which, but I didn’t see it so much as I heard about it.”

“Were you here at the time?” she asked.

He leveled her with a sheepish grin. “Me and the boys went for drinks but ended up day-drinking, and I called in… sick, sort of. More like, I called in irresponsible.”

She couldn’t help but laugh, which broke the ice.

“I heard about it, though.”

“Yeah?”

He nodded, leaned back, got himself ready to tell a story. “So, Jake was loading some lumber into a pickup truck over there on the side, facing the restaurant, which is also under the Caribou Jack’s namesake—the barbecue joint—when someone inside the SUV you described kicked out the side window. Jake said they looked like a woman’s legs and were bare, without shoes or socks. Jake said he couldn’t believe she wasn’t bleeding, but I don’t know how he knew they were a lady’s legs and not a guy's legs. Maybe there was no hair or something.”

“Keep going,” she said.

“Anyway, Jake said people started to notice, and one guy goes to help, but then this older gentleman bursts out of the store and fucking levels the guy.” He paused momentarily after realizing he’d dropped an F-bomb, then covered his mouth.
